After being detained in January, the 21-year-old is now being prosecuted.
It has been revealed that Mason Greenwood, a player for Manchester United, has been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault resulting in actual bodily harm. Greenwood was taken into custody in January of this year and later freed on bond. United also placed him on indefinite leave while the investigation was ongoing.
After reviewing the Greater Manchester Police’s testimony, the 21-year-old will now be charged with the crimes. The announcement was made the same day Greenwood was detained for allegedly violating his bond.
Mason Greenwood, 21, will be charged by Greater Manchester Police with attempted rape, using coercive or controlling behavior, and assault causing actual bodily harm, according to a statement from the Prosecutor CPS North West, Janet Potter. The same complainant is involved with all three counts.
Following a review of a dossier of evidence obtained from Greater Manchester Police, specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s difficult casework team approved the charges. On Monday, October 17, the defendant will make his or her first appearance in court at Greater Manchester Magistrates’ Court.
The defendant is a subject of current criminal proceedings and is entitled to a fair trial, the Crown Prosecution Service reminds all parties involved. There must be no internet commentary, criticism, or information exchange that could in any way undermine those processes.
United released a statement after it was revealed that Greenwood will be charged, saying, “Manchester United notices that the Crown Prosecution Service has filed criminal charges against Mason Greenwood.” While the judicial process is going on, the club continues to suspend him.
