The English club Chelsea has extended three contracts on Friday. The Premier League club extended head coach Thomas Tuchel’s contract to two years. On the same day, Chelsea also signs a new contract with defender Thiago Silva and striker Oliver Giroud.
Thiago Silva contract update
Thiago Silva’s contract has been extended by Chelsea after he made 34 appearances in the 2020-21 season. Silva will remain at the London club and continue to play for the Premier League side for another year. The 36-year-old will not leave Stamford Bridge extending his work under coach Thomas Tuchel, whose future has also been confirmed at The Blues until 2024.
“When we brought Thiago Silva in last summer, we knew we were adding a world-class player to the squad,” Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said for the official club website. “Thiago has duly shown everyone at Chelsea his immense quality throughout this season, and he has had a huge influence on and off the pitch for us.”
“We said when he signed that we hoped Thiago would add new trophies to his impressive list of honours, and he has done just that with our success in the Champions League this weekend. We now hope that he carries on in exactly the same fashion in the coming year.”
Oliver Giroud contract update
After Thiago Silva, Chelsea activated a contract option in April for Olivier Giroud, who has been linked with a move to Milan on a free transfer. On Friday, Chelsea surprised everyone by announcing striker Giroud’s one-year contract extension. As they prepared for the season’s pivotal weeks, the European champions stated they exercised a 12-month option in Giroud’s contract in April.
The 34-year-old appeared for the Londoners only 12 times in the 2020-21 season across all competitions. Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said to the official website: “Olivier has been such a crucial part of so many big moments for this club, from his contribution to our FA Cup victory in 2018 to score 11 goals on the way to winning the Europa League in 2019.”
“He has continued to score significant goals, and we will never forget his effort against Atletico Madrid on the way to winning the Champions League this season. With so much to still to play for, there was only one decision we could make when we exercised the option to extend his contract back in April.”
