La Liga president Javier Tebas whips out at Chelsea. Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, recently blasted Chelsea for their extravagant spending spree in the January transfer window. Enzo Fernandez, who joined the Blues for a British transfer record of €121 million, was among the numerous players who joined in January.
The West London-based team added David Datro Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, Noni Madueke, Mykhaylo Mudryk, Malo Gusto, and Fernandez permanently. On loan from Atletico Madrid, Joao Felix also arrived. Chelsea spent around £300 million in total in January.
Tebas discussed the discrepancy in wealth between the Premier League and other elite European leagues. The majority of the league’s signings, he said, were made by the Blues. Ben Jacobs quoted Tebas as saying, “The British market is drugged. This winter’s market, where Chelsea has made nearly half of the Premier League’s signings, makes it quite evident.
Spanish powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona made no new additions in January, in stark contrast to the Blues’ bustling window. Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, signed Matt Doherty for nothing and Memphis Depay for a pitiful amount of €3 million.
While Chelsea’s new arrivals received most of the attention, a few players also left the team. Their most prominent departure was Jorginho, who left for Arsenal for a reported €12 million. Malo Gusto, on the other hand, will spend the rest of the season on loan at his former team Lyon. Gusto will oppose Reece James in the right-back position when he returns.
To restart their season, the Blues continue to have a lot of work to do. With 29 points from 20 games, they are tenth in the Premier League standings, ten points behind fourth-place Manchester United.
On February 15, they will also play Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. Graham Potter’s side will benefit greatly from the addition of new players, but there may be a transitional phase for the newcomers. But the Blues don’t have much time on their hands. For their dismal campaign to come to a decent conclusion, they will need to see quick results.
