Rio Ferdinand, a former player for Manchester United, has praised Dennis Bergkamp, a former star of Arsenal, as one of his toughest opponents, adding that it was difficult to keep the Dutchman quiet.
On Wednesday, May 3, Ferdinand was announced as the newest member of the Premier League Hall of Fame. The Englishman played in the Premier League for the entirety of his career, appearing 504 times for teams including Manchester United, West Ham United, Leeds United, and Queens Park Rangers.
The six-time English champion faced off against some of the league’s best attackers. When asked which member of the current Premier League Hall of Fame was his hardest opponent, Ferdinand praised former Arsenal stalwart Bergkamp.
The former center-back recalled that Dennis Bergkamp was one of his toughest opponents (via Metro). “I faced him in a game when I was fairly young and inexperienced. He gave me all kinds of issues. “What a nightmare he was!”
Between 1995 and 2006, Bergkamp, who was excellent as a second striker, spent 11 years at Arsenal, scoring 115 goals and dishing out 96 assists in 416 games across all competitions. Three-time Premier League champion David Beckham met Ferdinand 16 times, winning seven and losing four.
