World Cup 2022 Squad of England performers and losers. Gareth Southgate, the manager of England, stated that he will choose his World Cup roster based on form, which explains why James Maddison was chosen but not Harry Maguire. Now that we know, The final 26-man England roster has been announced by Gareth Southgate.
As usual, there are many names on the list that have sparked heated discussion, and others who were left off may understandably feel pretty left out at losing out. Who are the England team’s key winners and losers as they prepare to go for Qatar?
The Performing Side:
James Maddison:
Maddison deserved to be a member of the England team. All you need to know can be learned by taking a fast look at his data from the previous 18 months. He has the most goal contributions (30) among English midfielders in the Premier League since August 2020. He is in front of players like Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Mason Mount, and Jack Grealish.
Furthermore, he accomplished this while playing for a struggling Leicester City team, which raises the bar for his performance. Yes, there are some concerns about his temperament and behavior off the field. In 2019, after having to withdraw from an England squad due to illness, he made the poor decision to visit a casino.
Callum Wilson:
When the 30-year-old started this season, the thought of him making a late charge on the World Cup squad seemed nothing more than a pipe dream. But six goals in 10 games for Newcastle has seen him pull off the seemingly impossible. Wilson looked way behind Tammy Abraham in the pecking order and even seemed to be behind Ivan Toney.
Yet his superb form has seen him emerge from the shadows and make a successful eleventh-hour bid for a seat on the plane as the backup to Harry Kane. His inclusion may raise a few eyebrows, but it’s tough to argue that his recent performances for Eddie Howe’s impressive Newcastle side do not justify his selection.
Connor Gallagher:
Gallagher is an unexpected addition, much like Maddison. However, Maddison’s performances this season make him virtually impossible to overlook, which is the key distinction. There was a lot of pressure to include him. In contrast, Gallagher has had difficulty reestablishing himself at Chelsea after an outstanding loan stint at Crystal Palace the previous year.
In all competitions, he has only made seven starts and one goal. So, not many people were anticipating the 22-year-old to receive the call. Especially because Ruben Loftus-Cheek, a teammate from Chelsea missed his flight to Qatar after making 19 appearances for the Blues across all competitions this season.
The Losing Side:
Tammy Abraham:
Tammy’s scoring form has been inconsistent recently, which is unfortunate. That was the reason given by Gareth Southgate for leaving the Roma striker off of his team. Abraham has undoubtedly found it difficult to maintain the goal-scoring form he displayed during his Serie A rookie season, but his exclusion still seems unfair.
Given that he has been so actively involved in the England setup over the past 18 months, the former Chelsea player must have believed that he would be traveling to Qatar. However, Wilson’s excellent Premier League form and the fact that he has only scored four goals this season have certainly worked against him.
Fikayo Tomori:
It’s pretty ridiculous that Harry Maguire made the squad but Tomori did not. Maguire may have served England well in the past, but his performance over the past several months has been so dismal that Manchester United seldom even gives him a second glance.
It’s unclear how Southgate can claim that Abraham’s absence from the team was due to a lack of form before selecting Maguire above Tomori. It simply doesn’t add up. It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that Tomori’s decision to play in Italy rather than England is the only reason he is unable to attend. Tomori will feel extremely wronged by this decision.
James Ward-Prowse:
Another athlete is likely to be moping right now. In addition to the disappointment of missing out on Euro 2020, Ward-Prowse now also sees his World Cup aspirations dashed.
Despite his lackluster play this year, he will undoubtedly consider himself more deserving of a spot than Gallagher, a Chelsea player who hasn’t exactly been a fixture in Southgate’s squad over the past few years. The fact is, though, that Ward-Prowse has suffered yet another significant international setback.
