Former Gunners player Martinelli is tired of Arteta’s tactics. Former Arsenal player Emmanuel Petit thinks Mikel Arteta’s strategy is to blame for Gabriel Martinelli‘s current struggles. The Brazilian forward had a productive opening month of the 2022–23 season, scoring five goals and even playing for his nation at the World Cup.
However, he has been struggling to find the net’s back since the start of the new year and now seems worn out. The pressure of directing Arsenal’s offense from the left flank, according to Petit, may have led to the decline in his performances.
The former Gunners player stated to Compare.bet about the winger: “I know they got a couple of interesting players, but he’s playing every single game. The World Cup players are all experiencing the same thing. I can attest from personal experience that it is not simple. We used to appear psychologically and physically exhausted after playing in a major event toward the end of the season.
“So I can imagine how exhausting it must be to play in a World Cup and then return to playing for their club every few days. They require some time to rest. Martinelli is still very young—only he’s 21—and has lots of time to develop. I’m not shocked that he’s going through a rough patch right now. Both physically and mentally, he appears worn out.”
Martinelli has less assistance on the left flank during games, according to Petit, who then discussed Arsenal’s current tactics: “I would also say he has a harder time due to the tactical setup. He doesn’t receive the same help that [Bukayo] Saka does on the right side with Ben White since [Oleksandr] Zinchenko is burrowing inside to the middle. I can see where you’re coming from because that’s how Arsenal plays most of the time: down the right side.
“For me, Martinelli can make a difference by himself,” he continued, “because of his quickness with the ball. But I don’t think that’s the fundamental cause of his form; I think it has more to do with his physical and mental exhaustion. Although [Mikel] Arteta needs to recover, I don’t think he’ll rotate.
After Leandro Trossard moved to the Emirates Stadium in January, the group was able to offer Gabriel Martinelli a much-needed rest. Trossard is a good fit on the left wing, and his presence could assist the Brazilian forward feel less strain.
The former Brighton player, who has entered three games as a substitute, has already scored one Premier League goal for Arsenal. The 28-year-old Belgian scored seven goals in 16 league games while playing for the Seagulls. He competed for Belgium in the World Cup as well.
The Gunners now top the Premier League standings by three points, but if they lose at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, they run the possibility of losing that lead to Manchester City.
