Piolo questioned the referee about the red card shown to Tomori. After Fikayo Tomori received a straight red card against Chelsea on Tuesday, Stefano Pioli had to inquire as to whether VAR was in use. The head coach of Milan voiced his surprise after Tomori was dismissed from their Champions League match against Chelsea after just 18 minutes because he denied Mason Mount of a chance to score by tugging at his shirt.
He clarified, “I only asked the referee if VAR was working properly,” in a post-game interview. Without a sure, I don’t think the referee had his greatest night tonight. Tomori’s straight red card against his former club comes after a lackluster showing in the opposite match, but it has sparked questions because many feel the punishment was too severe given that Mount was still able to shoot and remain on his feet.
Milan sits third in Group E with only four points after four games and consecutive losses to Chelsea; they are two points below RB Salzburg. Tomori will no longer go with the team on an away trip to Dinamo Zagreb, where a victory is necessary to maintain qualifying hopes going into their final group-stage match against Salzburg.
Match Highlights: Chelsea leaves Italy as the favorite to advance from Group E and return home. In their final two games, Milan must improve. Chelsea now leads Group E with seven points after the victory, one point ahead of RB Salzburg. They had 70% of the ball toward the end of the game and played exceptionally well. With a three-point deficit to the Londoners, Milan remains third in the division. They weren’t all that horrible here, but Tomori’s red card in the opening period really hurt them. The fact that Milan played with 10 men for the majority of the game helped the Blues win and leave Milan with the victory for their mature effort. The first-half goals were scored by Jorginho and Aubameyang.
