The first Kolkata derby of the Indian Super League featured a competitive match in front of the crowd. In the Indian Super League (ISL) on Saturday, ATK Mohun Bagan defeated East Bengal 2-0 to keep their first clean sheet of the year.
Both teams had opportunities in the first half of the competitive game. Hugo Boumous scored in the 56th minute after East Bengal goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh made a mistake in goal during the second half to alter the outcome of the match. Manvir Singh added a second goal to his first in the 65th minute to give the Mariners a convincing victory.
With the victory, Juan Ferrando’s team moves up to fourth place on the table with 6 points after 3 games, while Stephen Constantine’s team is ninth with 3 points after 4 games.
Feints run, passes, and an erroneous goal to cap it all off. The tight derby match was the Moroccan’s factor. He danced his way across the length of the field, at times taking on nearly the whole East Bengal defense. He eventually scored a goal from a distance that had a chance component to it. He might have been able to get a few more, though, if he had taken the chances he gave himself.
It was a spectacle as the first Kolkata derby of the Indian Super League season was played in front of a packed Salt Lake stadium. The mood was electric, even though Kolkata’s green and maroon half will be happier than the other. It was a bizarre situation.
The harmless Boumous strike from a distance squirmed through the East Bengal goalkeeper, leaving him with nowhere to run. Instead of at least placing his body behind the easy shot on goal, the 26-year-old sought to scoop the ball. It simply rebounded off of his hands and into the net. It was expected that Singh would lack confidence for the second goal and would struggle to stop Manvir Singh’s deflected shot.
