Wout Weghorst’s reaction to his first Old Trafford goal. In the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 victories for his side on March 9, Wout Weghorst scored his first goal for Manchester United at Old Trafford.
On January 13, the Burnley loanee who represents the Netherlands formally joined the Red Devils for a period of six months. Since then, he has played for his new team in 15 games and contributed to two goals and three assists.
His first goal for Manchester United occurred on January 25 at City Ground during his team’s 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the first leg of their EFL Cup semifinal. But Weghorst would have enjoyed himself even more if he had scored at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman said (h/t Official club website): “Yeah, I believe you could [see] it [joy after scoring his first home goal]” prior to his team’s league match against Southampton on Sunday, March 12. But yes, it was a wonderful sensation, and of course, I had to wait far too long for it. With the stadium in front of the Stretford End, it was a great feeling and I’m really happy that I scored at the finish.
Facundo Pellestri displayed outstanding flank play that led to Weghorst’s goal. The Uruguayan international sped past two Betis players on the right side to give Scott McTominay an opportunity, but goalkeeper Claudio Bravo parried his shot.
With eight minutes left in the game, Weghorst was in the perfect position to finish the shot and secure the 4-1 victory. On March 16, the two squads will compete in the second leg. Given that his team has a comfortable three-goal lead in the match, it is unclear if manager Erik ten Hag will field his best squad that day.
Anthony Martial has only participated in nine league games this season due to a variety of injuries, scoring three goals and dishing out two assists.
He last participated for Manchester United in the Premier League on January 14, when they defeated Manchester City 2-1. He is presently sidelined with a hip issue. Wout Weghorst has started each of their last 15 games in all categories, largely due to his injury.
Speaking about the Frenchman’s possible return against Southampton, manager Erik ten Hag said at his pre-match press conference (h/t Official Manchester United website): “Yeah, but I believe, all the time, we had a solid plan and until now it [didn’t] always [work well]. However, he is on his way back and has resumed exercising, so we will proceed with caution.
