Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes that winning the Europa League will be the beginning of “something else” for the club. United will take on Spanish side Villarreal in the final in Gdansk on Wednesday, aiming to win their first trophy since the Europa League success under Jose Mourinho in 2017.
After finishing second in the Premier League this term – his highest ranking in Norway’s three seasons in charge – Solskjaer’s goal is even higher, while he wants United to restore their previous glory. “These are big nights for us, it could be the cornerstone for something better to come,” Solskjaer said at a press conference on Tuesday.
“This is a bright future for this team, a young team, this is a team that we have rebuilt in recent years. We hope this is the beginning of something else. When players sign up to play for Man United, they sign up to win the trophy. They accept the challenge of being the best, because it is the best club in the world, so it is a pleasure under pressure from Man United. ”
Former manager Alex Ferguson traveled to Poland with the team, winning 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League during his tenure at United. 22 years after the Champions League final win against Bayern Munich, Solskjaer tried to bring glory to United, ending a historic triple under Ferguson, and the Norwegian welcomed the presence of the club’s most successful coach in Poland.
“He is a special person and he is like a football encyclopedia, even though yesterday I asked him a test question. One of the players got an answer in front of him, I am sure he is not satisfied with it,” Solskjaer said.
“Just to keep it with us when we eat, if the players ask themselves something they can ask him, he is always available for conversation, because this is the club of his heart. I hope he enjoys tomorrow night because I give him and this club the most credit for my career.”
However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stayed silent about the health of captain Harry Maguire and not certain if he could attend the Europa League final. The 28-year-old suffered an ankle ligament injury at Aston Villa 16 days ago and had used crutches until last week.
