Erik Ten Hag praises Manchester United star David De Gea. Before the second leg of Manchester United’s quarterfinal match against Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League, manager Erik ten Hag praised David de Gea.
The Red Devils will take the pitch in Seville after a 2-2 draw in the first leg at Old Trafford. Before the game, Ten Hag spoke to the media and was questioned about de Gea’s performance.
According to the Dutch manager (as quoted by the Manchester Evening News): “Goalkeeping is the primary responsibility of a goalkeeper. Everyone has their style. It has grown in significance at the highest levels in modern times due to possession. But ultimately, it’s about preventing goals, shots, crosses, and one-on-ones. David, in my opinion, is a total custodian.”
De Gea has played 47 times for Manchester United this season in a variety of tournaments. The Spaniard has had 21 shutouts. However, De Gea’s current deal with Manchester United will expire in the summer. The footballer has not yet signed an extension for a new contract.
Erik ten Hag shares what he expects from Sevilla:
Sevilla has some of the most ardent supporters in all of Europe. So it’s never an easy challenge to take on the Spanish team on their turf.
Ten Hag was questioned about the role that the spectators will play in the second leg. He said (as reported by Manchester Evening News): “You have to utilize motivation as a tool and control it. It matters when that happens. You need to be able to use it, especially in large games. We must pay attention to the game and give it our all.”
Christian Eriksen, a midfielder, was also questioned about his hopes for the contest. “We allowed them to enter the game in the first game”, the Dane claimed (via Manchester Evening News). “For the first hour of the game, we had effective control. This season, they have had many new coaches, but they are now beginning to win games. They have some excellent people on their team, and they are in good physical form.”
A 2-0 advantage that Manchester United had in the first leg was lost. Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire’s own goals allowed Sevilla to share the victory at Old Trafford despite Marcel Sabitzer’s early brace.
