After Chelsea owner Todd Boehly floated the notion of a Premier League all-star game, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp shot it down.
During his presence at a convention in the United States, the new Blues owner put the notion on the table.
He highlighted the desire for American sports to influence English football.
Boehly particularly mentioned the possibility of a play-off for relegation as well as the introduction of an annual all-star game in which the top flight would be divided into north and south halves.
Klopp, however, is not in favor of the idea, pointing out that clubs are already overworked due to a hectic schedule and that the end-of-season break is not as long as it is in America.
After beating Ajax in the Champions League, he said:
“He doesn’t hesitate, he doesn’t wait long! Great. When he finds a date for that he can call me.
“He forgets that in the big sports in America, these sports have four-month breaks.
“So they’re quite happy they can do a little bit of sport in these breaks.
“It’s completely different in football.
“Does he want to bring the Harlem Globetrotters and let them play a football team? It was surprising me the question, so please don’t judge my answers too much, but maybe he can explain it to me at one point.”
However, it was not convincing for Klopp supporters would be keen on the idea nor that rival clubs would be willing to compete together.
He added:
“I’m not sure people want to see that. Imagine that, [Manchester] United, Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle players all on one team that’s not the national team, just a north team. Interesting game.
“All the London guys together. Arsenal, Tottenham. Great. Did he say it? Interesting.”
