Inter Milan is eyeing to sign Lazio manager Simone Inzaghi after Antonion Conte stepped down from his post at the Nerazzurri. Inter is the Scudetto holders and will compete in the Champions League next season.
Lazio president Claudio Lotito insists that they will “announce the contract renewal” of Inzaghi, on the other hand Inter are willing to increase the 45-year-old’s wages and guarantee Champions League football.
Over a friendly luncheon with President Lotito and director Igli Tare, Inzaghi appeared willing to pledge his future to Lazio until June 2024. “We will make the announcement soon,” insisted Lotito to Il Messaggero’s online edition, hoping to hold the coach to his word. The coach’s contract with the Biancocelesti expires on June 30, but talks over an extension were postponed until last night.
However, Inter learned that Max Allegri was going for Juventus, and the other options weren’t as well-suited as Inzaghi to replace Antonio Conte. Therefore they approached with an enhanced offer to Inzaghi, according to various sources. Sportitalia has confirmed that Inter is keen to provide €4 million a season, plus €1 million in performance-related bonuses, this is double the amount proposed by Lazio.
Inzaghi has spent most of his playing career and his entire coaching career at Lazio and said to be divided between the proposition and his commitment to the club. The Corriere della Sera and Il Messaggero are confident Inzaghi is wavering and will eventually accept the Inter offer.
Nothing has been signed yet with either club, so Inzaghi has not broken any rules. In 2016 Inzaghi replaced Stefano Pioli in Lazio and has achieved three trophies at a time when silverware was almost exclusively claimed by Juventus.
