As Wolves were forced to rue a saved penalty for Raul Jimenez, Sevilla set a semi-final battle with Manchester United in the Europa League courtesy of the late goal of Lucas Ocampos.
In 1972 Wolves debuted in a quarter-final in Europe and knew a triumph would set up a last-four clash with Manchester United but they started the game as underdogs against five-time winners Sevilla.
In the 12th minute when Adama Traore received a penalty following another exciting midfield run but Yassine Bounou saved Jimenez’s tame and indecisive spot-kick, Nuno Espirito Santo’s team was granted a glorious chance to take an unexpected advantage.
There is nevertheless a possibility that the goalkeeper of Sevilla had stepped off his line before the shot was made, although at least one player managed to reach the box before Jimenez kicked the ball.
A Sevilla tactical tweak-unbeaten in a club record of 18 games-swung the game in their favor and they went on to control possession.
However, the Liga side failed to create a clear-cut chance before halfway into the second half with the unchecked Jules Kounde heading over from Suso’s kick.
Seville took Wolves’ heart right at the death though when the superb Ever Banega selected Ocampos with an outstanding cross at 88 minutes on the clock and finished with a clever glancing header setting up a semi-final with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team in the last four, crushing the Molineux club’s hope of European glory in the way.
