Stefano Pioli, manager of Milan has encapsulated the results of the return leg against Manchester United in the Europa League 1/8 final (0-1, first leg 1-1).
The coach told Sky Sport Italia that they should have scored in the first half and they are very disappointed with this elimination because overall the team looked great in these two matches.
“It’s a real shame. We put in so much effort to get to this stage and the team deserved to go on, but we should have put in a little more effort. I don’t think we deserved relegation.”
“We are talking about Manchester United, a team that played in the semi-finals last season, this season in the Champions League group, and just a fortnight ago beat Manchester City.”
“We did a lot of things right in those two games, but both of those conceded goals were a result of our mistakes rather than the opponent’s, and that’s disappointing.”
“We made mistakes even before Pogba’s goal. We should not have let Bruno Fernandes get the ball back, we should not have left Pogba unguarded in the goalmouth.”
“If Mandzukic, Rebic, or Leao had been on the bench today, things could have been different. We were very close and now we have to find the details that were missing today.”
“If you think back to the canceled goal by Kessie in the first game, it would be like looking for excuses.”
“Today, Man Utd had more ball possession, but overall they hardly threatened us.”
