Former Manchester United player Gary Neville has discussed the impact of top coaches on the development of football as exemplified by Pep Guardiola at the helm of Manchester City.
“The impact Pep has had on football over the last 10-12 years is incredible. When you think of coaches from different generations, you think of the greats – Arrigo Sacchi at AC Milan with the pressure and the pressure, Sir Alex Ferguson with the risk, the rotation, and the different teams he first showed to English football. Great coaches influence an era not only by results but also by their style, their approach to the game,” said Neville in his podcast.
“Gone are the days when the pundits used to say, “Hit the big one”. The reality is that current trends will not change. Why should it? This is how the game is evolving; I think it has to do with the influence of Guardiola, Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho – all those great coaches.”
“I think the EPL is competitive in Europe again because of the coaches. We used to want the best players in the world to come to England, not Barcelona or Real Madrid.”
“I don’t agree. We need the best coaches. They influence our game, English players and coaches. The best coaches will produce the best players.”
