Athletic Bilbao salvaged a point with Real Sociedad ending up in a 1-1 draw at the Anoeta stadium. In front of a capacity crowd, it was the visitors who came close to taking an early lead in the football match.
Some poor defending advantage was taken by Inaki Williams as he nodded the ball past Remiro who was well outside of the area, but his charge toward goal was denied by a phenomenal challenge from Aritz Elustondo. The forward’s claims for a penalty were waved away as the Sociedad captain had intervened cleanly.
As is always the case for a derby, tackles were flying in and chances were few and far between. Alexander Isak was the spearhead of the visitors’ attacks, but his two dangerous strikes were well kept out by Unai Simon. It was the hosting team who took the lead with Alexander Isak converting a penalty in the 58th minute despite an early opportunity for the visitors through Raul Garcia.
Imanol Alguacil’s men had to weather a storm after taking the lead, with both Martinez and Alex Berenguer testing Remiro from close-range headers. Despite Martinez seeing red for a second offence, Bilbao struck the home crowd to silence – Iker Muniain’s free-kick should’ve been saved comfortably, but the Spanish goalie inexplicably decided to punch it clear, and ended up directing it into his own net.
Real Sociedad are now sitting comfortably on the first place with a 1-1 draw surpassing Sevilla and two Madrid giants who, however, have a game to spare to and still might overtake the Basques.
