Toni Kroos has revealed how a long stint in anti-doping control after Real Madrid’s 4-0 Clasico defeat to Barcelona made a stormy night even worse.
La Liga leaders Los Blancos were comprehensively outplayed by their traditional rivals in the absence of Karim Benzema, with strikes from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ronald Araujo and Ferran Torres giving Xavi’s side the win.
Kroos left the field at half-time with the score of 2-0 in Barça’s favour and watched from the sidelines as his team won with a thumping victory.
Speaking on his podcast, The Germany international said he and Vinicius Junior conducted doping checks with Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba.
Kroos said:
“That rounded off the night, sitting there for an hour-and-a-half in doping control.
“A small side note: 0-4, a flesh wound and the night was completed in the 80th minute when the doctor arrived and said who had to go to doping control. Piqué and Jordi Alba were there too. We talked. Vinicius and I were the gangs of losers. So I was very happy when I got out of there.
“I kept looking at the game from the inside and saw 3-0 and 4-0. That was, of course, very bitter. After 0-1, the game went one way, disappointing. Overall very weak until the end.”
Real remain in the driving seat to win La Liga this season, sitting nine points clear of closest competitors Sevilla, and Kroos urged his teammates to put the Clasico defeat to one side and finish the term strongly.
He added: “We have to raise our heads again. Everyone would have signed this starting position before the season. That’s why it’s about shaking off and moving on.
“Anyway, the season has been perfect so far. Everything we wanted to do, we did, and we’re doing well. There’s a good chance if we don’t let that throw us off course.”
