Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has been left out of Luis Enrique’s Euro 2020 squad after an injury-plagued 2020-21 season, because of which Real Madrid has been unable to depend on their captain this season. The 35-year-old has kept the armband for Spain under Luis Enrique, but before returning to Madrid injured he only played 50 minutes of the March World Cup qualifiers against Greece and Kosovo. Ramos has appeared in 21 games for Real Madrid in all competitions this season and missed 31 games.
Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has commented on his failure to make the Spanish national team’s bid for Euro 2020.
“After several difficult months and a strange season in which I experienced something I have never felt before in my career, comes the news of the Euros,“ tweeted the player. “I fought and worked every day, mind and body, to achieve 100 per cent results for Real Madrid and the national team, but things don’t always work out the way you want them to.”
“It pains me that I could not help my team more and will not play for Spain. But in this situation, the best thing would be to rest, fully recover and return next year as we have always done. It hurts that I will not be able to represent my country, but I must be honest and sincere. I wish all my teammates good luck and a great tournament. I will be another one to cheer you on at home.”
With the absence of Ramos, former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique will be without a single player from Real Madrid to his finals Spain squad. Aymeric Laporte, who only recently switched allegiances from France to Spain, is one of the center-back choices favored over the veteran.
Athletic Bilbao defender Inigo Martinez has withdrawn from the Spain squad of Euro 2020 claiming he is not 100% physically or mentally fit and would prioritize taking a break.
