Following a heart attack in May last year, Real Madrid and Spain great Iker Casillas have declared his retirement.
Calling for time with Real Madrid, Porto, and Spain on a distinguished career, Iker Casillas declared his retirement from football.
Casillas released a statement on Tuesday via social media and announced that he would call time on his playing days.
“The important thing is the path you travel and the people who accompany you, not the destination to which it takes you,” the 2010 World Cup-winning captain tweeted.
During last year’s training with Porto on May 1, the 39-year-old suffered a heart attack for which he needed surgery, since he hasn’t played any match.
In February this year, he declared a subsequently withdrawn bid to preside over the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), at that time Port President Pinto da Costa said Casillas had retired.
Nevertheless, the player himself did not publicly confirm the move, and last month Porto head coach Sergio Conceicao was forced to quash reports that Casillas was going to turn out in a farewell appearance for the club.
After his team-mates defeated Benfica 2-1 to complete a domestic double, he took to the field to win the Taca de Portugal on the weekend.
