Real Madrid star praised by Bundesliga men as “hardest opponent ever”. The toughest opponent Dominik Szoboszlai has faced on the field was Luka Modric of Real Madrid, a midfielder for RB Leipzig.
In his career, the international from Hungary has only faced Modric twice. The first time it happened was in a UEFA 2020 Euros qualifier in March 2019 when Hungary defeated Croatia 2-1.
The most recent encounter between the two midfielders took place earlier this season during Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory against RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League group stage. While Modric was hooked in the 81st minute with the score at 1-0, Szoboszlai played the full 90 minutes.
Szoboszlai appears to still be thinking about the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder. A fan recently questioned the 22-year-old about the toughest opponent he had faced up to that point in his career.
Through MadridUniversal, he responded: “Modric. He was literally everywhere on the field when we faced Real Madrid. He was there if I made a left turn. He was there if I turned to the right. He was one step in front of me whenever I attempted to move forward. He was already behind me as I turned around. That is why I would say to him, yes.”
In his 49 pass attempts against Die Rotten Bullen, Modric completed 90% of them, had one key pass, four recoveries, and two interceptions. In what was a comprehensive midfield display, he also triumphed in three of his four duels.
The 37-year-old suffered an injury most recently on April 24 during Real Madrid’s 4-2 victory over UD Almeria. Even Carlo Ancelotti stated that the crucial Croatian player might not play in the Copa del Rey championship game on May 6 against Osasuna.
Real Madrid needs to bring in a striker soon, according to Carlo Ancelotti:
Real Madrid may now sign a prospective long-term replacement for Karim Benzema with Carlo Ancelotti’s blessing.
The 35-year-old has matured like good wine, taking home the Ballon d’Or in 2022 and tallying 29 goals in 37 games this season. Nothing endures forever, and Ancelotti is aware that the same is true of the French striker.
As reported by Football-Espana, Ancelotti recently stated to reporters: “The club’s long-term goal is to sign a player who is nine years Karim’s senior. However, Karim has performed admirably up to this point, and while he is in good health, it is very effective. Karim has certainly had his ups and downs, but Rodrygo and Asensio have both shown progress.”
In the long run, Real Madrid lacks a natural No. 9 to take Benzema’s place. While Marco Asensio, like Benzema, has a contract that expires this summer, Rodrygo Goes primarily plays down the right flank.
