Liverpool receives a boost as Nunez returns to training. Darwin Nunez, a striker for Liverpool, has resumed training ahead of his team’s match against Southampton on Sunday (May 28).
Nunez missed the Merseysiders’ most recent two games because of a toe injury. After defeating Leicester City 3-0, Jurgen Klopp’s team was halted to a 1-1 tie by Aston Villa.
Nunez has returned to training with his teammates today, May 23, according to Liverpool Echo. The frontman from Uruguay is prepared to get back to work as Klopp’s team keeps trying in vain to finish in the top four.
The Liverpool team is now in fifth place in the league, three points behind fourth-place Manchester United. For the Red Devils to qualify for the Champions League, they simply need a point against Chelsea on Thursday.
Regardless of whether Liverpool is out of the top-four competition by the time they play the Saints, Nunez’s comeback is still a positive development. This season, he has made 42 appearances in various competitions, contributing four assists and 15 goals.
Nunez transferred from Benfica to Klopp’s team last summer for a club-record £85 million plus add-ons. He had trouble at the beginning of the season, but he has since begun to thrive in the Merseysiders’ frontline.
Liverpool will compete against a Southampton team that has already been demoted from the Premier League. They will start as overwhelming favorites in the match at St Mary’s.
Jordan Henderson, the captain of Liverpool, pays respect to James Milner and Roberto Firmino:
James Milner and Roberto Firmino will be departing Anfield after the current campaign when their contracts expire. They have served the Merseyside club for a very long time and have earned the title of Kop Legends.
The two played together on the Liverpool teams that took home the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup titles. In 361 appearances across all competitions, Firmino has scored 110 goals. In contrast, Milner has played in 331 games and contributed to 72 goals.
Jordan Henderson acknowledged the two’s departures from the team while praising their accomplishments. He admitted to finding it tough to watch them receive a guard of honor following the 1-1 draw with Villa on the club’s official website: “The departure of [Firmino] and the other boys are very sad. I found it difficult to watch them pass through the guard of honor and receive the greeting they did from a distance. I’m also feeling fairly emotional about it.”
Henderson also talked about how well the pair played against the Villains. Off the bench, Firmino scored an essential equalizer: “I think Milner’s performance level is still very high; he came on and made a difference, just like Bobby. Now we can only wish them luck because whichever clubs they choose will be receiving two outstanding players.”
Firmino has a lot of suitors, including Barcelona, but he hasn’t decided on his next team yet. According to Fabrizio Romano, Milner has chosen to sign with Brighton & Hove Albion as a free agent.
