After suffering a severe knee injury in training this week, former Barcelona and Valencia center-back Jeremy Mathieu retired from football.
According to Mundo Deportivo reports, the ex-French international is out of contract with the current side Sporting Lisbon at the end of June, but the Portuguese club has agreed to terminate their deal with each other.
Before joining Toulouse in 2005, the 36-year-old joined French club Sochaux through the youth ranks and made 582 senior appearances in a 16-year career.
Making 126 appearances in La Liga with Los Che, he moved on to Valencia in 2009 before heading to Camp Nou in 2014.
In both their 2015 and 2016 La Liga title wins, Mathieu has been a regular for La Blaugrana, before departing Sporting Lisbon in 2017 on a free transfer.
Although before moving to Portugal he turned 33, winning two Portuguese Cups in 2017 and 2018 he also retained a regular place in their side.
