Gary Neville suggests few teams who can challenge Man City. Only Liverpool, in Gary Neville’s opinion, can compete with Manchester City for the Premier League championship next year.
Gary Neville, a former captain of Manchester United, doesn’t think Arsenal will contend with Manchester City for the Premier League championship the next year. Instead, he thinks Liverpool will compete with City to win the title.
Manchester City won the Premier League title for the 2022–23 season after beating Arsenal 1-0 on May 20 to earn their third straight championship.
Even though Arsenal had the lead in the title chase for the majority of the season, City changed their approach after losing 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur in February. They recently lost two points in the league after a 1-1 tie with Nottingham Forest.
Eight-time Premier League champion Gary Neville claims that Liverpool is the only side capable of challenging Manchester City for the league crown due to their recent success. The former United defender said, as reported by Football365, to Sky Sports: “I am aware that Arsenal has given Manchester City a tough time this season, but the only club that has proven they can compete with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, in my opinion, is Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.”
He added: “They have fallen far short of expectations this season, but it’s unclear whether they will rise to them again next year given their track record.”
According to Neville, Manchester City has been expertly led by Pep Guardiola to put together a continuously spectacular run of form despite facing challenges. He clarified: “Manchester City’s players have real quality, that much is obvious, but they also can string together plays and overcome challenges when the going gets tough.”
He continued: “That requires a lot; a manager must lead them and provide stability. It occurred at Manchester United under Alex Ferguson, at Liverpool under Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly, and during Arsene Wenger’s time at Arsenal, therefore other teams need to have a look at that model.”
He then concluded: “To be able to do it consistently as [City] have, you have to be a great manager and have a terrific collection of players. The other teams must strive to be like that. Liverpool is now the team that has demonstrated this over the past five or six years.”
